Forklifts

Forklifts are vehicles for lifting, carrying, and moving objects, usually over short distances. They are sometimes referred to as a powered industrial truck or lift truck.

Usage is to frequently move large, heavy objects, frequently in containers or on pallets, in factories, warehouses, and building sites. Forklifts are crucial for material handling because they increase productivity and decrease manual labor.

• Core Function

  Primarily to lift and move materials using a forked platform, controlled by a hydraulic system. 

• Applications

  They are used for tasks like lifting, lowering, stacking, and transporting materials, often on pallets. 

• Key Features

  Typically have a mast (a vertical framework supporting the forks), a carriage (where forks attach), and a power source (electric, gas, or diesel). 

  

• Types

  There are various types of forklifts, including counterbalance forklifts, rough terrain forklifts, and side loaders, each for different tasks and environments. 

• Regulations

  Forklift operation is subject to regulations, such as those from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which detail safety requirements for operators and equipment. 

Forklift trucks are available in many variations and load capacities. In a typical warehouse setting, most forklifts have load capacities between one and five tons. Larger machines, up to 50 tons lift capacity, are for lifting heavier loads, including loaded shipping containers.
