Work Platforms

A work platform is a temporary or permanent elevated surface whose design is to provide safe access for workers to perform tasks at a height.

They can be a fixed structure or a mobile device, and their usage is for various settings, including construction, maintenance, and manufacturing.

Key Characteristics

Elevated Surface: Work platforms are raised above the surrounding area, allowing workers to reach otherwise inaccessible locations. 

Safety: The design is to provide a stable and secure working area, often incorporating features like guardrails and fall protection systems. 

Accessibility: Platforms facilitate access to specific work areas, whether it’s for routine maintenance, construction, or other tasks.

Mobility: Some work platforms’ design allows them to be moved easily to different locations, while others are fixed.

Aerial Work Platforms (AWPs): These are mechanical devices that elevate workers, tools, and materials to work areas at height, like scissor lifts or boom lifts.

Fixed Work Platforms: These are permanent stationary platforms for access to machinery, equipment, or between buildings. 

Mezzanines: While often permanent structures, mezzanines can also be designed as work platforms, particularly for usage as temporary storage or for equipment access. 

Catwalks: Narrow, elevated walkways that provide access to specific areas or equipment. 

Rack-Supported Platforms: These platforms are supported by pallet racks, allowing for access to stored goods and materials.
